To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right

An evening with journalist and author Christopher Mathias in conversation with Leah Sottile.

Thursday, February 26, 2026.

7 p.m.

Clinton Street Theater | 2522 SE Clinton Street, Portland, OR 97202.

At a time of rising fascism in the United States, To Catch a Fascist: The Fight to Expose the Radical Right by acclaimed investigative reporter Christopher Mathias is a fearless depiction of the shadow war being waged to defend what’s left of democracy. At great personal risk, anti-fascists go undercover into far-right groups, gathering intelligence to unmask Americanshiding their real identities behind pseudonyms and usernames - fascists who often hold positions of real power. As Mathias reveals in this pulse-racing investigation, behind that label lies a determined network of activists working to expose white supremacists before they act on their violent fantasies. He draws on years of groundbreaking reporting on the far right, weaving together first-person access, leaked communications, and high-stakes stings into a narrative that is both urgent and electrifying. Timely and unflinching, To Catch a Fascist is not just a searing look at the rise of a new American fascism, it is a call to reckon with how we got here in the first place, and what it will take to push back. This book is essential reading for anyone trying to understand the future of resistance.

The Oregon Justice Resource Center is bringing Christopher Mathias to Portland for an evening in conversation with local journalist and author Leah Sottile (Blazing Eye Sees All; When the Moon Turns to Blood.) Join us to learn more about how anti-fascists unmask hate at great personal risk and what we can learn at a time of rising authoritarianism about how to confront and confound fascism in our communities and our government. Signed copies of To Catch a Fascist will be on sale at the event courtesy of our partners Broadway Books.
